iOS 16.4.1(a): Apple releases new iPhone update
Normally, the iPhone updates carry labels like “iOS 15” or “iOS 16”. In addition, there are intermediate versions such as “iOS 16.4”, with which the company is adding additional functions. Versions such as iOS 16.4.1 are usually supplementary security updates. But with iOS 16.4.1 (a), Apple is currently playing out an update with a new name.
The background: The iPhone group already announced in autumn 2022 that it wanted to optimize the procedure for its updates. With the so-called Rapid Security Response (RSR) updates – in German “quick security measures“ – the company now wants to roll out new versions even faster.
iPhone update: Apple gets off to a rocky start
The addition “(a)” marks the first iPhone update of this kind. Other versions with the letters “(b)”, “(c)” and “d”) are likely to follow. The procedure should meanwhile be faster, mainly because users would have to load smaller amounts of data.
Another advantage: Apple wants to react even faster to potential bugs and security gaps with the “quick security measures” function. It is currently still unclear which problem the iOS 16.4.1 (a) update is based on. Apple only speaks of “important security fixes”.
At the premiere of the new quick update, however, numerous users complained about error messages. For example, a missing internet connection was incorrectly reported. Many iPhones also warned their users that the version could not be verified. Apple now seems to have fixed the problem.

“The new rapid security measures will only be provided for the latest version of iOS, iPadOS and macOS – starting with iOS 16.4.1, iPadOS 16.4.1 and macOS 13.3.1,” Apple said. As far as the installation process is concerned, the new security measures hardly differ from classic updates.
iPhone users can also find the new versions in the menu under “General” and “Software updates”. As before, the installation takes place overnight after the appropriate setting and requires a restart. The differences are in the details:
Since the “quick security measures” show a smaller amount of data, they can also be installed without a power supply and with a low charge level. Also new: the option to remove the mini-update again. All you have to do is display the version in the menu under “Info”.
