That’s it, now there’s more to come
For a change, there’s a real success story for Netflix. The streaming provider’s most expensive in-house production to date is a complete success. That was really fitting. That’s why there’s now a sequel to “The Gray Man”. But there is more to come.
Losing customers, average content… Netflix has done better. But with the last blockbuster you could now inspire the audience. “The Gray Man” With a budget of 200 million US dollars, is not only the most expensive Netflix film of all time, it also landed right from the start Number 1 on the Netflix charts in 92 countries.
MCU as a great role model: Netflix turns “The Gray Man” into a film universe
While the pro critics at Rotten Tomatoes aren’t particularly thrilled, with under 50 percent approval, viewers love the film – over 90 percent of the votes are positive. Spurred on by its success, the streaming giant now wants even more and announces a major spy franchise based on the film (Source: Netflix).

First there will be a direct sequel. Also on board, of course, is the star of the film – Ryan Gosling. All this is staged again by the brothers Joe and Anthony Russo. They were already responsible for the first part and should not be unknown to Marvel fans. The MCU films Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were tackled by the siblings and grossed billions of dollars. Netflix probably thought: What they can do for Disney and Marvel, they should now do for us.
Then there will be another spin-off film. According to Netflix, this should explore a different element of the The Gray Man universe. But what exactly it is about is not revealed yet. Just so much, the screenplay is being written by renowned authors Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool, Zombieland). There should be enough templates, as “The Gray Man” is based on the book series of the same name by the American author Mark Greaney, who became known alongside Tom Clancy and wrote the last books in the well-known Jack Ryan series.

When will we see all of this? Netflix is still holding back. If you follow the regular work schedule in Hollywood, you should bring a little patience with you. We would not expect the sequel before 2024 or even 2025. Either way, the calculation works for Netflix – lots of money, talented filmmakers, good actors and a mass-compatible, exciting story. Cynics would blaspheme: films from the modular principle. But success proves the plan right.
