That will end forever in January
An era is coming to an end at Vodafone: A classic message that many people have probably already sent or received will be discontinued from January 2023. At Vodafone, MMS will soon be obsolete.
End of MMS: Vodafone will discontinue the technology in 2023
Vodafone will end support for MMS from January 2023. This was announced by the network operator and mobile phone provider from Düsseldorf as part of the 30th anniversary of the sister technology SMS (source: Vodafone). An exact date is not given.
“Compared to SMS, MMS has always led a shadowy existence. The technology is outdated and the customer benefit is minimal,” explains Tanja Richter, Technical Manager at Vodafone. At least since mobile Internet has become the absolute standard on mobile phones and smartphones, MMS (abbreviated to “Multimedia Messaging Service”) has compared to messengers like WhatsApp and Co. definitely lost out.
Richter also knows this: “Today, pictures and videos are almost exclusively sent to individual recipients or groups via messenger.” This also allows customers to avoid the steep prices: industry standards were 39 cents for an MMS within Germany – that too must have always stood in the way of the march through of multimedia messages.
But what happens to MMS that arrive at Vodafone customers from the Telekom or o2 network? According to Teltarif, users then receive an SMS from the Telekom or o2 network in which they are sent a one-time password. With the cell phone number of the recipient and the one-time password, you can View message online or download. But this detour should not last long. Because the end is also in sight for Telekom and o2.

MMS not extinct: Telekom and o2 continue to pull through
In the other two German mobile networks, the MMS is not given up at the same time. When asked, Telekom confirmed this Tel tariff but that the Bonn group will offer the MMS until December 31, 2023. Previously, the approaching end of 2022 had already been considered, but then extended.
However, o2 has no current plans for the end of MMS. However, it is unlikely that the outdated communications technology will be continued there against the current. It is more likely to result in a parallel end with Telekom or take place in a timely manner to the date of Bonn.
