that much you pay (not) extra for a 5G subscription

Are you in the market for a 5G subscription? With some providers you get the 4G successor for free, with others you have to pay extra. In this article we have listed the possible costs of 5G per provider for you.

Read on after the ad.

Overview: costs of 5G per provider

The iPhone 12 is the first Apple phone that can handle 5G. The successor to 4G has been available in the Netherlands since 2020 and the mobile network will mature in the coming years, because it will roll out wider and the maximum speed will increase.

5G is still in its infancy and is far from commonplace in the telecom world. For example, with T-Mobile, Tele2 and some Vodafone subscriptions you have to pay extra monthly to use 5G. The table below shows the possible additional costs of a 5G subscription per provider.

1. KPN

At KPN, 5G is ‘free’. It is therefore a standard part of your subscription with device. Even when you take out a sim-only package, you don’t have to spend extra money for 5G.

2. T-Mobile

If you take out a 5G subscription with T-Mobile, you pay 2 euros extra per month. These additional costs also apply when you take out a SIM only with 5G. The provider makes no further distinction between the different maturities.

3. Tele2

Tele2 uses the same conditions as T-Mobile. All 5G subscriptions therefore have an additional cost of 2 euros per month. It does not matter whether you take out a SIM only or subscription with a device. The term also has no influence on the price.

4. Vodafone

With Vodafone, it depends on which subscription you take. 5G is a standard part of all Red packages. You do not have to pay extra, but that is the case when you opt for a Start subscription. If you want to use 5G in combination with a Vodafone entry-level package, you pay 2 euros extra per month.

What about other providers?

For the time being, you can only take out 5G subscriptions with the major Dutch providers. Budget providers are not yet offering the new network standard. That is because 5G will roll out more widely in the coming years and so there is still a lot to invest. Only the large networks are prepared to do this, because smaller providers mainly compete on price.
