Like almost every month, May 2023 brings some important changes for workers and consumers. In addition, new laws take effect.

For example, the so-called Deutschlandticket – also known as the 49-euro ticket – will apply from May 1, 2023. The minimum wage in the care sector is also increasing. Meanwhile, Vodafone is increasing the prices for its existing customers.

1. The 49-euro ticket starts

2. Vodafone increases its prices

Vodafone is turning the price screw. That comes from one report the price comparison platform Check24. Accordingly, the mobile operator adjusts the tariffs of its Internet contracts for existing customers.

According to Check24, the prices for DSL and cable contracts will increase by five euros per month. Affected Vodafone customers are said to have received a letter and an email about the price increase. There is a right to extraordinary termination.

3. Minimum wage in the care industry is increasing

Nursing employees will receive more money from May 1, 2023. Salaries rose to at least twelve euros as early as October 2022. According to the “Fifth Regulation on Mandatory Working Conditions for the Care SectorFrom May 2023, nursing professionals will receive 17.65 euros per hour by law.

Nursing staff who are in their first year of training receive 14.90 euros per hour, nursing assistants in turn 13.90 euros.

4. Corona warning app is discontinued

The Corona-Warn-App will be discontinued from April 30, 2023. In concrete terms, this means that from May 2023 the application will no longer issue any warnings. From June the app will even be in sleep mode and can no longer be updated. However, vaccination certificates should still be available.

5. By law: From May 2023, the Digital Markets Act will regulate Google, Amazon, Apple and Co.

The so-called “Digital Markets Act“, the Digital Services and Markets Act, will come into force on May 2, 2023. Technology companies such as Amazon, Google and Co. will then have to comply with strict rules within the European Union (EU).

The goal: to ensure fair competition. The Digital Markets Act, for example, provides for restrictions on personalized advertising and self-preference. In addition, users must be able to delete pre-installed apps. If the platform operators disregard the rules, sanctions are imminent. The worst cade: breaking up the company in the EU.
