Tesla sells over 200,000 electric cars in a quarter for the first time

Tesla has delivered a total of 201,250 electric cars in the past three months – a record. But analysts had expected a little more. At the stock exchange there was only a flash in the pan.
In the first quarter of 2021, Tesla had just under 185,000 electric cars, a new record. This is already a thing of the past in the second quarter. In the months of April to June, the Californian carmaker said it delivered 201,250 electric cars. For comparison: Tesla had 90,650 deliveries in the second quarter of 2020.

Tesla: delivery record disappoints analysts
Analysts had meanwhile expected even more vehicles to be delivered. The forecasts ranged from 193,000 to 231,000 – on average, according to Factset, it was 202,800, like CNBC reports. The stock exchange traders showed correspondingly restrained joy. At the beginning of trading, the price of Tesla shares on the Nasdaq rose 1.5 percent. On Friday noon (local time), the price of the paper moves back to the level of the previous day.
In the course of the past quarter, Tesla produced 206,421 vehicles, including 204,081 Model 3 and Model Y. In addition, 2,340 Model S and Model X rolled off the production lines at Gigafactorys. In the first quarter, however, Tesla hadn’t made a single Model S or X.
At the beginning of June, Tesla also delivered the first of its new Model S plaids. According to Elon Musk, this will be the fastest production car ever built. Tesla initially delivers a few hundred models of the electric car, which can go up to 322 kilometers per hour, and later a few thousand per week, as Musk said.

Recently, however, the luxury car had made negative headlines. One of the first Model S plaids delivered is said to have caught fire and burned out. Particularly bad: the driver narrowly escaped death by fire because the electronic door lock failed. His lawyer has now called for the Model S plaid to be withdrawn from circulation until the cause has been clarified.

According to Musk, Tesla also had to contend with numerous production difficulties in the past quarter. Like many competitors, the manufacturer was affected by the ongoing shortage of chips. Increased material costs had also forced Tesla to raise its prices.
