Take odd jobs abroad on purpose, swim laps for an hour or get out of bed extra early to make some extra time for yourself. These parents have their tricks.

Romeo (41): “As an interim manager, I deliberately take on odd jobs outside the city. Or in another country, if possible. Last year I spent two nights a week in a hotel in Belgium. I love my family, but with a home office I don’t have a second to myself. I take those two days so as not to go crazy. I wish my wife the same: her weekly aerobics class doesn’t necessarily have to be during dinner time either.”

Morning race

Said (39): “At seven o’clock in the morning there is still no chicken in the pool, and if I swim a few lengths I have no back pain for 24 hours. Perfect excuse to leave the house before dawn twice a week when my wife and sons are at the start of the daily morning race. Okay, the pool is still open when the kids are asleep, but when should I watch football?”

Out the door right on time

Diana (35): “The tennis competition only starts on Sunday at eleven o’clock, but I am already present at nine o’clock. Cup of coffee, newspaper; out the door just in time before the chaos breaks out at home.

“Cup of coffee, newspaper; out the door just in time before the chaos breaks out at home”

My daughters fighting, jam on the walls, my husband struggling with his hangover from the night before; I count my blessings on the tennis court. My husband takes his own moments to press his mustache.”
