Stromer cost over 5,000 euros more than a year ago

Not everyone can afford an electric car these days. The Stromer should actually not only be the better choice for the climate, but also for the wallet. On the contrary, the purchase prices are rising rapidly – there is no end in sight.

Inexpensive e-cars remain a dream – for the time being

Whether VW, Tesla, Fiat or any of the other popular brands with electric cars on offer – the prices for new cars are being raised practically everywhere. On average, car buyers today have to pay 5,385 euros more for an e-car than a year ago – an increase of 14.5 percent, as calculated by the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) (source: Handelsblatt).

That in itself is a hefty premium that customers have to be able to afford. But there is also another problem for e-cars: in the same period Prices for new cars with internal combustion engines have risen significantly less. There is an increase of 3,531 euros or 12.5 percent. With the ramp-up of electromobility and thanks to technical advances, things should actually go the other way around.

The problem is particularly clear using the example of the Fiat 500 (electric): The electric version with the weakest battery costs 31,000 euros – a real house number even for such a popular small car. Of the Predecessor with combustion engine was still for 12,500 euros less to have.

There are many reasons for the price explosions: The Chip crisis hits e-cars harder because there are more electrical parts installed there on average. On top of that comes the price development on the raw materials market, which makes the already expensive batteries for electric cars even more expensive.

The advantages of e-cars crumble as prices rise:

Electric cars more expensive: no end in sight

Actually, their prices should fall with technical progress and higher global production volumes. But now it looks different. According to the industry service E-Source, the Battery costs will increase by 22 percent by 2026, to 138 US dollars per kWh, according to the Handelsblatt. $100 is considered the magic limit to push the development of cheap electric cars.

Internationally, the signs are largely pointing to rising prices for electric cars. In Germany is likely to hit customers even harder. High inflation leaves less money for large purchases. On top of that, the subsidy for pure electric vehicles will decrease from 2023 and will be eliminated entirely for plug-in hybrids.
