‘Stop complimenting fathers’

Compliment a father for changing his child in public? Or go shopping alone with three children (and manage to reach the cash register)? According to mother and blogger Renee Plant, all those praises to fathers are unnecessary.

“A dad doesn’t need to be complimented just because he’s a dad,” she writes on her blog.

Diapers and bibs

“I am more than happy to have my husband, who is a wonderful father to our two children,” Renee says. “But the fact that he often gets compliments from other people should be over.” Renee is referring to a recent visit to the zoo, where people praised her husband holding their youngest on his arm. While no one paid attention to her: messing around with the pram and a thousand diapers, wipes, bibs and toys.

“Or the time my husband came back from the grocery store with our son and daughter. He said people complimented him for having both children with him alone. Funny: Those are the same people who look at me when it seems like I can’t control my son while shopping, because I’m trying to calm our crying daughter in the car in the meantime.’

‘Role division is outdated’

Renee doesn’t question her husband’s qualities as a father. But she’d like people to give dads a little less compliments just because they’re dads. ‘I work at home. I often hear people say that I am so lucky that my husband looks after the children so that I can work. Do you know? I’m pretty sure my husband’s coworkers don’t spend all day talking about how happy he is that I’m home with the kids.’

All those praises to fathers are unnecessary, according to Renee. ‘The idea that only mothers should take care of their offspring and that fathers are mainly there for fun (playing) moments is nonsensical and outdated. The next time you see a father feeding or changing his child, just get on with what you were doing.’
