Spotify still skips the HomePod, but promises AirPlay 2 support
Native support for Spotify on the HomePod is long overdue for subscribers to the streaming service, but it is still not available, while Apple has offered this possibility since 2020. We will obviously have to wait.
Native support would allow Spotify to be controlled via the HomePod using Siri. Can we expect this functionality one day or another? The platform said to Mark Gurman that there has not been a “significant volume” of criticism regarding the lack of support for Apple’s smart speaker. In fact, support is not a priority.
On its community site, Spotify allows users to make requests and then vote. HomePod support has received 5,849 votes since 2020, but that’s obviously not enough to push the group to develop the feature.
It is true that this choice may surprise when you know that Spotify accused Apple of anti-competitive practices in 2019. It was very serious since there is a complaint to the European Commission. Spotify then listed several problematic elements in its eyes, including… the impossibility of natively supporting the HomePod. Apple opened up on the subject in 2020, but Spotify has obviously decided to draw a line under it.
In the process, Spotify ensures that AirPlay 2 support for its iPhone and iPad application will be available one day or another. The streaming service says it “remains committed to supporting AirPlay 2 at some point in the future” and that he is “on track for this to eventually happen”. The problem is that there is no date communicated for availability. Also, it is worth remembering that Spotify has been talking about the upcoming support for AirPlay 2 since… 2021.
