Spotify proposes ‘DJ function’: music selection determined by OpenAI

Spotify will use artificial intelligence to play music tailored to the user. The ‘Spotify DJ’, as the function is called, knows your music taste and also provides spoken commentary for the songs. Based on feedback, the function should continue to work better. The DJ is now being tested in a select number of countries.

Spotify DJ

A good DJ can sense exactly which songs are tailored to his audience at a party. Spotify now wants to match that power thanks to its DJ function, it explains in a blog post. Algorithms determine which songs you want to hear based on the time of day, your music taste and recent listening behavior.

The interesting thing about the Spotify DJ is that the system is only getting better. Users are given opportunities to give feedback on songs you like and don’t like and the DJ function takes that into account. He can also play new releases that you like or opt for nostalgic songs.

OpenAI technology

This function was created by selections made by music connoisseurs, but they were assisted by artificial intelligence. More specifically, the generative AI that the OpenAI company is developing. That is the parent company behind ChatGPT.

Furthermore, the DJ will also talk between songs with a voice that, according to Spotify, sounds very human. The voice is based on podcast host Xavier “X” Jernigan, known from ‘The Get Up’ podcast. To make the voice sound realistic, Spotify uses technology from Sonantic, a company that was acquired by Spotify in June 2022.

The DJ only works in English for now and for Premium subscribers in the United States and Canada. It is not known whether Spotify also has plans to launch the feature in more countries in the short or long term. The DJ function is somewhat reminiscent of the new radio stations that competitor YouTube Music has received.
