Starlink Aviation: Satellite internet on the plane
Noisy Starlink the corresponding terminal is suitable for basically every aircraft. In addition, because of the speed, all passengers could access it at the same time. A low latency of around 20 milliseconds would ensure that streaming, video calls and online games are also possible.
Meanwhile, Starlink Aviation aims to provide global coverage. In addition, the service should be available on land, on water and on the ground during takeoff and landing. The company now wants to apply for the necessary type approvals for business and regional jets.
Internet on the plane: delivery from 2023
In contrast to the previous terminals, Starlink Aviation is primarily suitable for attachment to the fuselage of aircraft due to its flat shape. The one-off costs for an Aeroterminal are reported to be around 150,000 US dollars. The installation is not included.
The company estimates the monthly server fees at between 12,500 and 25,000 US dollars. In addition, there should be a data flat rate. Corresponding subscriptions and orders are possible with immediate effect. However, the hardware will not be delivered and made available until mid-2023.
Starlink wants to send thousands more satellites into space
Starlink currently has around 2,800 satellites. In order to guarantee a worldwide network for fast Internet, the company wants to expand its fleet to around 12,000 satellites. Starlink has received approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to offer the service in vehicles, ships and airplanes.
