Sources confirm: still a week earlier Christmas holidays for primary schools

Primary schools are to close next week, but if it is not possible for practical reasons to close so early, they can still remain open next Monday, sources report.

Infections during Christmas dinner

The Outbreak Management Team (OMT) had already advised the outgoing cabinet several times to extend the Christmas holidays, but the cabinet did not respond. Until now, so. With this measure, the OMT hopes to limit the risk of infections during Christmas dinner. Emergency care for parents with essential professions will become available, as will daycare centers for children up to the age of four. More details will be announced at tonight’s press conference.

Criticism from parents

The measure can count on little understanding from parents. According to 60 percent of parents, schools should remain open in any case, according to a survey by Parents & Education. They believe that their children had to miss many lessons this school year because of the corona policy. Moreover, it is complicated for (home) working parents to arrange a babysitter. The OMT previously warned that grandfathers and grandmothers should not be called in for this, because they are extra vulnerable.

The current measures, including the evening lockdown, will most likely be extended until January 14.
