soon apps for sale for 10,000 euros

In early 2023, Apple will announce its biggest App Store pricing change ever. And it has nothing to do with inflation. What do the new prices look like and why is Apple making the adjustment? iPhoned explains.

Read on after the ad.

New prices in the App Store in 2023

Apple has announced the biggest update ever to app pricing in the App Store. From the beginning of 2023, many more price categories (so-called ‘tiers’) will be added to the App Store, giving developers the choice between more prices for their apps.

In practice, this means that a developer can better match the price for an app to the quality of the application. Apple now gives developers a limited number of options to determine the price of an app. There are fixed prices that slowly increase, from which the developer can choose the amount they think the application or subscription is worth.

Apps for sale up to 10,000 euros

Prices can currently vary from 0.99 euros to 999 euros, with fixed intermediate steps. Developers can therefore determine their own price, but they do not have an unlimited choice. Letting your app cost 1.46 euros, for example, is not possible. This price range will therefore be greatly expanded next year.

Apple is expanding the number of pricing to 900, which is nearly 10 times the number currently available, according to Apple. The new prices range from 0.29 euros to 10,000 euros. However, the highest prices are only available on request, which must be approved by Apple. This prevents scams in the App Store.

Update available worldwide in 2023

The new pricing will be immediately available in 2023 in all 175 countries and regions of the App Store, including the Netherlands (and Belgium). You will immediately notice this in the prices of subscriptions in apps: these can then be adjusted by developers. So keep a close eye on whether your subscription becomes more expensive or perhaps even cheaper!

Even more expensive prices in the App Store?

This isn’t the first time Apple has made changes to pricing in the App Store. Last year prices fell in Apple’s App Store, but since September you have to pay more if you want to buy a new app on your iPhone or iPad.

It is not expected that applications will suddenly become much more expensive, this update mainly provides more flexibility for the developer. It may therefore also be the case that the app or subscription becomes slightly cheaper. In any case, Apple seems to be responding to the ongoing criticism of the App Store (prices).
