Though the PS4 will be phased out in the coming years, Sony is still making a buck at the moment thanks to the last-gen console. In the PlayStation Store, one game genre is particularly in demand, which is usually loudly criticized by many players.

PS4 cash cow: Free-to-play games generate huge sales

In a recent financial report, Sony has revealed all sorts of interesting information. Thanks to the documents, we know that the PS4 will be retired in three years and that the last-gen console has been on the shelves like lead since the PS5 was launched.

But there is another trend revealed by the presentation slides: Free-to-play games seem to be a big hit on the PS4 – and ensure a warm shower of money for Sony. According to a graphic, the five free games Fortnite, Genshin Impact, Call of Duty: Warzone, Apex Legends and Rocket League are now doing more than 25 percent of sales in the PS4 PlayStation Store out. For comparison: In fiscal year 2016, the percentage of sales of F2P games in the PlayStation Store was still 5 percent. So more and more PS4 players seem to be dumping money into free-to-play games (source: Sony).

PlayStation wants to jump on the trend train

Free-to-play games that can be enjoyed for many years seem to be becoming more and more attractive to many gamers – and Sony wants a bigger slice of the pie too. The company plans to to launch three live service games by March 2023, which should bind the players to themselves in the long term. By 2025 there should even be a dozen such games from their own studios (source: VGC).

Bungie should also be working on exactly such games after the completion of the takeover by Sony. After all, the Destiny studio has huge expertise in this area.
