smartphones with removable battery, do you want them back?
A bill has been written in the European Parliament on guidelines for smartphone manufacturers to make their batteries more replaceable. They can then no longer be glued to the housing. 10 years ago, smartphones with a removable battery were the norm. Would you like them back?
EU bill
On Monday it was announced that the EU wants to impose stricter rules on manufacturers of consumer electronics. According to the proposal, batteries must consist of 70 percent collectable materials by 2024. Batteries would no longer be glued to the rest of the housing, which also makes them difficult to repair.
In the comments under that article, we saw readers already dreaming aloud about telephones with removable batteries that were the most normal thing in the world about ten years ago. However, this bill does not necessarily indicate that such batteries are making a comeback. Instead of a completely removable back, manufacturers could also place a clip behind the battery instead of glue to meet European requirements.
Demise of removable batteries
iPhones never had it, and over the years Android manufacturers have also increasingly moved away from removable batteries. With a non-removable back, they can get started with premium glass designs. A high-quality design sells better.
In addition, brands can also save space in the housing. That’s very important, because everything under the housing of phones is like a complex puzzle. Especially with the focus in recent years on larger camera lenses, every extra millimeter can come in handy. And finally, there’s waterproofing, which is much harder to achieve with a removable back.
AW Poll
Just insert another battery when your battery is empty. It seems useful, but at the same time it also has drawbacks. We would like to ask you if you would like to see the phones with removable batteries return. Vote in the AW Poll and clarify yes answer in the comments at the bottom of this article.
