Smarthome standard Matter is (again) taking longer

The arrival of the new smart home standard Matter has been postponed again. If all goes well, we will only see the first devices with Matter support in the autumn.

Read on after the ad.

New smart home standard postponed

The new smart home standard Matter is expected to appear in the first half of 2022. Unfortunately, the release has been postponed until the fall. That’s because the Connectivity Standards Alliance needs more time to improve code quality and stability. An advantage: because of the postponement, more devices will soon support the new smart home standard.

Matter will ensure that smart home products from different manufacturers work together better. Apple, Google, Amazon and about 200 other companies are working on it. The goal: to ensure that smarthome technology from different companies learns to work well with each other. This way you no longer have to constantly pay attention to compatibility.

Matter has been postponed before. Previously, the smart home standard was called Project CHIP. Shortly after the name change, the CSA promised that the first Matter products would appear at the end of 2021. That didn’t work, so it became the first half of 2022 – but that doesn’t work again.

More about smart home standard Matter

Dozens of companies are making smart home devices in 2022. From smart lamps to intelligent doorbells; you can think of it so crazy, or there is a clever version of it. All these devices are interconnected – at least that’s the intention. Unfortunately, compatibility is still quite a thing. So you have to pay attention to whether your brand new smart thermostat works with HomeKit, for example. If not, then you’re stuck with baked pears.

Matter would change this, as it is a new standard. That means that almost every smart home device supports Matter. This makes all your devices work well together in the future, regardless of manufacturer. In addition to Apple, Google and Amazon, parties such as SmartThings, The Zigbee Alliance, IKEA and Signify are also working on Matter.
