smart language bot for its search engine

Google has unveiled plans for a language bot that will soon strengthen its search engine. ‘Bard’, as the system is called, can provide complex answers to user questions. The system will first be tested internally and then it will be more widely available.

It took a while, but now it’s official. On its blog, Google presents Bard, a language bot that can answer questions in natural sentences. Google makes Bard sound like a natural person using its LaMDA language model, a system previously envisioned as technology that the Google Assistant should eventually talk to naturally.

Bard’s knowledge comes from the search engine and Google Search. and that is also the first Google product where we will encounter Bard. That will happen “soon” after Google has first further refined the system with internal tests. The intention is to expand the test and collect more feedback.

Compete with ChatGPT

That principle may sound familiar to anyone who has worked with the preview version of ChatGPT over the past few weeks. ChatGPT is a revolutionary tool from the OpenAI company. The system already had millions of users in the first days after its launch.

A clear advantage of Bard over ChatGPT is that Google’s AI bot is immediately combined with the search engine. ChatGPT currently has to make do with information dating from September 2021, although OpenAI is working with investor Microsoft to combine its language bot with the current information from Bing.

A complex answer from Bard

An example

Google gives an example of how Bard can work in its blog post. “When people think of Google, they often think they come to us for quick answers and facts. Like, ‘How many keys does a piano have?'” explains Google CEO Sundar Pichai in his blog post. “But more and more people are coming to Google for deeper insights and knowledge, like, ‘Which is easier to learn, piano or guitar? And how much practice is required for each?'”

Bard can answer all facets of this complex question and it makes a clear distinction in his response between the musical instruments piano and guitar. At the end of the answer, the user can still find search results, according to a screenshot that Google already shares.

No real conversations?

What we also learn from that screenshot is that Bard probably won’t work in chat form, as we’ve come to expect from ChatGPT. You receive a complex answer to your question in the search results, but it is not clear whether it is possible to ask additional questions based on the answers you received.

In ChatGPT, conversations with the language bot are also saved, so that you can pick up on a conversation later. So far we can’t see that in Google’s screenshot of Bard in the search results either.

More info on February 8

So it seems that Bard may excel with up-to-date knowledge, as opposed to ChatGPT’s outdated info. On the other hand, Google’s system seems less equipped for conversations and additional questions, but whether that is correct remains to be seen. Google will reveal more about Bard at his Life from Paris event streaming on February 8.
