Siemens achieves electricity record with innovative wind turbine
Siemens has set a new electricity record with a wind turbine. Within 24 hours, the prototype of a 14 megawatt system produced almost 359 megawatt hours. That is enough to cover around 1.8 million kilometers in a mid-range electric car.
Sustainable energy is becoming increasingly important. It is therefore important to further develop existing technologies in order to generate more energy per area. Siemens Gamesa is now taking this path and recently announced a new one record.
While still a prototype, the SG 14-222 DD wind turbine is already considered an industry revolution. According to Siemens Gamesa, one of the wind turbines on the north coast of Denmark generated around 359 megawatt hours in one day. That should be enough to drive a medium-sized electric car about 1.8 million kilometers.

Siemens thus surpassed the previous record set by the manufacturer General Electric. One of the company’s systems recently generated 312 megawatt hours in 24 hours. The numbers appear impressive, but reflect a trend in the industry. Because with increasing records, the size of the wind turbines also increases.
Anyone who thought of wind power in the past probably had structures with relatively compact rotor blades in mind. A rotor blade of the SG 14-222 DD prototype, on the other hand, has a length of 108 meters. The diameter is meanwhile at 222 meters. Such a wind turbine covers a wind area of ââ39,000 square meters.
Novel wind turbine is powerful and sustainable
According to Siemens Gamesa, the system should be able to achieve an output of around 14 to 15 megawatts on the high seas. In the best case, this is enough to supply up to 18,000 households with energy. The wind turbine is also special because of another property, because the rotor blades are environmentally friendly.
Siemens Gamesa developed a manufacturing technology that allows the later recycling of most of the components. Meanwhile, the manufacturer Vestas and Siemens Gamesa are also independently building turbines with a diameter of 236 meters.
