Secret Xbox plan would have sealed the end of the console
In the competition between Xbox and PlayStation, the Sony console currently seems to have a decent lead. However, rival Microsoft had a plan that would have finally won the console war.
PlayStation in the end? That was Microsoft’s plan
Microsoft is currently arguing with the US market regulator about the takeover of Activision Blizzard. In the course of negotiations is now one curious email from 2019 emerged that show the Xbox maker in a whole new light. Xbox Studios boss Matt Booty writes the following:
“A different view than the general view below might be that we (Microsoft) are in a very unique position to put Sony out of business.”
Booty sees video game content as crucial. So it could be worth it in 2020 two or three billion dollars to avoid Tencent, Google, Amazon or Sony becoming the “Disney of video games” and owning most of the content of value.
However, the Xbox boss sees Sony as the only true competitor that could “compete with Game Pass.” Even there you would be the competition though 2 years and 10 million subscribers ahead (Source: IGN)

Xbox knocked off: Microsoft is now playing the underdog
Microsoft also provided IGN with a statement regarding what the email said. That’s how she is now more than three years old and would refer to industry trends that were never followed up. That’s why the content is irrelevant to the takeover of Activision Blizzard.
However, the confidence in the email differs significantly from the tone Microsoft is using during the current negotiations. The Xbox manufacturer always emphasizes that Sony’s PlayStation far superior in practically every respect is. The company is even willing to admit that it’s been losing the console war for more than 20 years. If you believe the internal e-mail, Microsoft is probably not that small and weak and could well pose a serious threat to Sony.
