Samsung’s premium phones lose the battle with Apple

Samsung is finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with Apple with the sale of its premium phones. In 2021, the manufacturer will see its market share in the highest price segment decrease, while Apple can score in important growth markets such as India and China.

Samsung’s premium phones

The sales figures of smartphone manufacturers during the fourth quarter and the entire year 2021 are known. IDC’s market researchers note that Apple was able to sell the most smartphones in the last quarter, while Samsung remained the largest if you look at the full year 2021. Although Apple number grew stronger last year and both companies are increasingly feeling the hot breath of Chinese Xiaomi.

Still, the most important news is that Apple’s iPhones are increasingly scoring in the premium price segment compared to Samsung’s Galaxy S series and foldable phones. In 2020, Samsung still had a market share of 29 percent in the premium segment, a figure that has now fallen to 18 percent. At the same time, Apple sees its market share grow from 63 percent to 79 percent in the same period.

Apple in the emerging markets

CEO Tim Cook’s company owes this primarily to its success in emerging markets. Apple saw its sales grow 40 percent in China, which now accounts for 21 percent of total sales. This is evident from figures from Counterpoint. The company manages to conquer the premium segment of China by acquiring market share from Huawei. Samsung, on the other hand, does not see in the top five of that country.

But Apple also manages to convince in India. It is striking that Samsung sells three times as many phones there, on the one hand, which it owes to its Galaxy A and M series of mid-range and budget phones. On the other hand, it is Apple that achieves the highest turnover with 1.8 billion euros, compared to 1.7 billion for Samsung. Bloomberg noted that.

New opportunities in 2022

Samsung therefore faces a challenge with the Galaxy S22 devices that will be presented on January 9. The company may be able to convince more people now that the Note series is living a second life in the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

And later this year, we expect a new generation of foldable phones, a new product category that Apple hasn’t yet ventured into. Samsung previously looked back with satisfaction on the sale of its foldables, which have been doing better than the Note series in 2020 since last year. The company achieved record turnover in the last quarter of 2021, which was announced last week.
