Samsung stands in its own way with the Galaxy S23

With the Galaxy S23, S23 Plus and S23 Ultra, Samsung has introduced three new high-end smartphones that should offer the best of the best from Samsung. But is that really true? No, as a closer look shows. Samsung itself sells better hardware to the competition.

A commentary by Peter Hryciuk

Actually, everything could have been so beautiful if Samsung really used its full technical potential. In fact, this is not the case with the new Galaxy S23 smartphones. With the faster processor and the better cameras there are minor innovations, but we have to pay for that with a noticeably higher price. The better technology is there, after all, Samsung delivers it to the competition.

Samsung provides the competition with better displays

Let’s take the display for example. Samsung installs displays with a brightness of up to 1,750 nits in the Galaxy S23 smartphones. This is on the level of the Galaxy S22 smartphones. Only the normal S23 has become significantly brighter because it previously had a darker display. Actually has Samsung but even better displays on offer and sells them to Xiaomi, for example. In the Xiaomi 13, a Samsung display works with 1,900 nits. Samsung also supplies the displays for the iPhone 14 Pro (Max), which reach a peak brightness of up to 2,300 nits. Why isn’t the iPhone display built into the Samsung cell phone?

Be careful with storage

If you want to use the Samsung Galaxy S23 for several years, you should buy at least 256 GB (Image source: GIGA)

You also have to be careful with the internal memory, which Samsung installs in the cheapest Galaxy S23. Only there is a version with 128 GB, which corresponds to UFS 3.1 storage. The Galaxy S23 Plus and S23 Ultra are there only from 256 GB with UFS 4.0 storage, which reaches speeds twice as high. That may not matter much in the first few months, but if you want to use the phone for several years, you should pay the 60 euros more for the 256 GB model. You get the better memory, which is much more future-proof.

Pre-orderers don’t have to worry because Samsung doubles the storage for free (check it out at Samsung). Later you should rather avoid the version with 128 GB. Samsung simply should have given up the 128 GB version here. Probably not, because otherwise the price would be over 1,000 euros for the entry.

Where is the satellite feature?

It is also incomprehensible to me why Samsung has dispensed with the satellite function. Apple has these installed in all iPhone 14 models. The Samsung boss claims that the technology is not yet advanced enough. If Apple is using them as successfully as we have seen over the last few months, then I would say the opposite. Apple is now a year ahead and other manufacturers will follow. Huawei has already installed it. Qualcomm’s technology is here. Why it is missing in the Galaxy S23 is a mystery to me.

One decision was absolutely right

Even if some things bother me about the Galaxy S23, S23 Plus and S23 Ultra because the great potential has not been fully exploited, I find it all the more important that Samsung has finally detached itself from the Exynos processor. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy is a performance monster and is 100 percent built into all Galaxy S23 in the world. Thus, Europe and Germany no longer a second choice and we’re finally getting the performance we deserve in a smartphone. I would buy the Galaxy S23 just because of the processor.
