Samsung smartphones suffer from swollen battery after years

A YouTuber video discovered that a relatively large number of Samsung devices had swollen batteries after a period of inactivity. The problem seems to be more widespread, including with DroidApp.

Swollen batteries at Samsung

The YouTube channel Mrwhosetheboss has made a discovery about swollen batteries in Samsung devices. It seems to have happened with at least six Samsung devices that have been inactive for a longer period of time. After reporting this channel, several other channels are reporting similar problems with swollen batteries.

The Galaxy Note 8 is one of the victims

The YouTuber wanted to make a video of Samsung phones over the past few years. He dived into the storage space, and discovered that the battery of the Galaxy Note 8 from 2017 was swollen. This caused the glass back to break. He then discovered similar cases in several other devices with a built-in battery. These included the Galaxy S6 from 2015, Galaxy S8 from 2017, Galaxy S10e from 2019, Galaxy S10 from the same year and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 from 2020. It is striking that the battery of the Galaxy S20 FE from 2020 also started to swell.

It is good to mention that these are devices that are used intensively for a shorter period of time, and then end up ‘in the drawer’. Several devices from other manufacturers were also kept in the locked storage room, none of which showed a swollen battery. Several other YouTube channels have also reported swollen batteries in Samsung devices. MKBHD, among others, mentions this, indicating that it has already replaced swollen batteries several times, in all cases Samsung models. In addition, the DroidApp editors have a Galaxy S6 Edge from 2015 that also has a swollen battery.

swollen battery

The YouTuber and Samsung are in contact about this problem. One of the devices has been submitted for analysis. It’s no secret that batteries swell over time. The chance of this is increased if the battery is stored completely empty. It is better to charge it half and store it.

Samsung has not yet responded to the messages. It is also not known why Samsung models seem to suffer from this more. This may have to do with a choice of a specific supplier or another characteristic of the battery. If you have a Samsung with a swollen battery, we’d love to hear from you by commenting below this post. If you have a swollen battery, it is absolutely not recommended to charge it. It is also not recommended to tinker with this yourself.
