Samsung shows crazy display: blood pressure measurement with a difference
Samsung has presented a special OLED display that is flexible to use. The display can be stretched by 30 percent and can therefore be worn by patients on the arm, for example. Will we soon see the same technology in smartwatches?
Stretchable OLED display: Samsung shows prototype
The Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology has presented a flexible, stretchable OLED display. The prototype is one small screen that has an extensibility of up to 30 percent compared to the original condition. Samsung sees potential applications in the medical sector in particular.
To underline the capabilities of the stretchable display, Samsung connected it to a blood pressure monitor. Patients can do that worn on the inner surface of the arm without restricting freedom of movement too much. The first model only has a diameter of a few centimeters and is about the size of a plaster.
This is what the experimental OLED display looks like:
For the base material, the decision was made to use elastomers that have been chemically further developed to be insensitive to heat. In addition to better portability, Samsung sees other advantages: According to the company, will the heartbeat is 2.4 times stronger and also measured more preciselythan is the case with conventional solutions. Due to its design, the sensor for measuring blood pressure cannot move so much on the skin.

Samsung: stretchable smartwatch in the works?
In the announcement Samsung points out the technology that the solution now presented is only a prototype. It is still a lot of work is needed before stretchable OLED displays appear in finished products. Should the technology prove itself, then the stretchable displays could perhaps one day be used in smartwatches, where they make them more comfortable to wear.
