‘Samsung most aggressively in removing apps in the background’

Samsung has recently topped the list of DontKillMyApp. Since the Android 11 update, the company uses a new system that aggressively breaks down background processes of apps.

Usually it is good when a manufacturer comes out as the winner and ends up at the top of a test list, but not when it comes to DontKillMyApp. This website has been researching for years how smartphone manufacturers deviate from Android’s proprietary functions that enable efficient battery management.

Samsung is now at the top of DontKillMyApp’s list and that’s the result of its Android 11 update. The DontKillMyApp researchers have discovered that the South Korean manufacturer has a new policy on optimizing battery performance on phones. This ensures that background processes are aggressively broken down. According to the research team, it may even thwart the functioning of health apps and apps that collect sensor data.

Two places ahead

Samsung previously ranked third in the DontKillMyApp list. The only way to turn off battery optimizations is to do that individually for each app from the settings. In addition, Google itself already took measures in Android 11 to ensure that users have more control over which apps are allowed to run in the background.
