Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra gets new 200 MP camera
According to a new rumor, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will have a new 200 MP camera. Samsung will use the new HP2 sensor for this, which is a previously unreleased camera sensor. Is this good news?

New 200 MP sensor
Samsung has been developing its new 200 MP camera sensors for a while now. These sensors are in the company’s ISOCELL HP series and are supposed to merge several small pixels into one pixel. On the one hand, this should ensure photos with a lot of detail, because the sensor contains many megapixels. The problem, however, lies in the fact that they are relatively small pixels and they simply catch less light than large pixels. However, by merging the pixels you still ensure that a large pixel is created, this technique is called ‘pixel binning’.
For example, in the case of the 200MP HP1 sensor that Samsung announced last September, four or sixteen pixels are merged. So the sensor uses 4×4 or 2×2 pixel binning technology. With this, the device takes standard photos with a resolution of 12.5 or 50 MP. This sensor cannot yet be found in a Samsung smartphone, but the sensor will soon be found in the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra.
Latest 200MP camera in the S23 Ultra?
According to the famous rumor spreader Ice Universe the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will have an HP2 sensor. He is even ‘100 percent sure’. This sensor is an unannounced camera sensor from Samsung. Details about the sensor are therefore not known. an earlier rumor from the same rumor does report that the HP2 sensor will be between the high-end HP1 sensor and the cheaper HP3 sensor in terms of pixel size.

Possible problems
Samsung has previously announced new camera sensors, but more often than not, it was the manufacturer that did not use them first. And Samsung seems to do this a bit to see if there are possible teething problems in the sensor. For example, we know that Samsung chose to integrate a new sensor with the S20 Ultra. Samsung really wanted to show what it had to offer with this device. This device was impressive, but it did have some problems with the camera. For example, the device had difficulty focusing and caused various artifacts in the image. We hope this will not happen with the possible new camera sensor of the S22 Ultra. Claudia wrote the following in her review of the S20 Ultra:
I had quite a bit of trouble focusing on objects, especially with moving subjects like my Dachshund. Autofocus is slow to respond and often focuses on the wrong details, blurring the final photo.
Old cameras could be better
Samsung then chose to use a new sensor in the S21 Ultra and reuse it in the S22 Ultra. On paper, the S22 Ultra did not have a better camera than the S21 Ultra. However, because Samsung is getting to know the sensor better and better with new processors, the company is able to produce better photos. The question is therefore whether a new sensor is really good news, but of course we can’t say much about that right now.
The same goes for the camera sensors in many of Google’s Pixel phones. For years, Google used the same 12.2 MP camera for their new Pixel smartphones. As a result, Google got to know this sensor better and better and to get better photos from this old sensor. Google also uses this sensor again in the Google Pixel 6a, the review of this device will appear later here on Androidworld.
Availability
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will probably only be announced next February. However, rumors about the device have been appearing since last June. These are of course early rumours, as we get closer to cold February, we’ll probably find out more and more. For now we will continue to enjoy the summer weather in August.
