Researchers make the dream come true

Researchers from South Korea have succeeded in transmitting electricity wirelessly over a distance of 30 meters. The head of the team is already saying that charging cables for cell phones, tablets and other devices could become superfluous. But there is at least one catch.

For mobile phones & Co.: Charging possible from a great distance

If you want to supply your smartphone, tablet, headphones or other devices with electricity again, you basically have two options today. Either the classic charging cable is used or wireless charging is used. With the latter variant, however, the device must be placed on a charging mat. One Power transmission from a distance has not yet arrived in everyday life.

This is exactly what researchers at Sejong University in South Korea want to change. According to their own statements, they succeeded in small amount of current through the air and transmit a distance of 30 meters. However, the efficiency is still limited, as a look at the details shows: Of the 400 mW of energy sent, only 85 mW reached the receiver – but a start has been made.

The receiver is a small photovoltaic cell, which converts the incoming infrared light back into electricity. Accordingly, there must be visual contact between the transmitter and receiver, which is another problem. Accordingly, it is not possible to send the current wirelessly through walls.

To ensure safety, the researchers designed the system to automatically switch when something interrupts the infrared beam. In safe mode, the energy transfer not harmful to skin or eyes be (Source: Phys.org).

Electricity from a distance: Mobile phone manufacturers are staying tuned

Smartphone manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo and Motorola are working on their own solutions to power devices remotely. Last year, Oppo showed a technology that still allows 7.5 watts. Xiaomi has its own “Mi Air Charge” technology and Motorola can charge phones from 3 meters away.
