Redmi Buds 3 Pro: Almost perfect shot in the black (review)

A few weeks ago, Xiaomi introduced true wireless headphones (TWS), which have the potential to flood more expensive competitors within their brand after a long period of technology and design stagnation. The new Redmi Buds 3 Pro tries not to embarrass its origins and tries to fully show that devices crammed with modern technologies It does not necessarily cost a bag of money. Succeeded? Mostly yes…

Package contents

You can tell that the Redmi Buds 3 Pro headphones are a little more than just a basic model by the box in which it is delivered. Xiaomi wrapped the novelty in a glossy box with embossed graphic elements on the surface and care can also be seen inside. In addition to the case with the headphones themselves, the box also contains a “drawer”, in which you will find a quality, yet very short USB-A power supply – USB-C cable, and even three pairs of interchangeable plugs.

In our case, when we ordered the headphones right after the launch on AliExpress, we also got the headphones silicone case with a handy carabiner. At first glance, it seems cheap, but the opposite is true. It fits perfectly, has a plug to protect the connector, raised button highlighting and, conversely, a thinner layer at the signaling diode.

Basic parameters

  • Bluetooth 5.2 (range 10 meters)
  • handset weight approx. 4.9 grams
  • weight of the case even with headphones approx. 55 grams
  • case dimensions 65 x 48 x 26 millimeters
  • active noise cancellation (ANC)
  • transparency mode to enhance the environment
  • wireless charging

Finally a refreshing design

After years of Xiaomi basically just copying the look of Apple AirPodes on her headphones, or still emitting only dull “ovals with a plug”, nice design change. The external shape is still oval, however, probably due to a larger number of microphones, stronger batteries or a slightly larger transducer, the part that connects the control surface to the earplug has changed. No matter what the benefits to the resulting sound, the headphones are behind me much more elegant.

Suppression and amplification of the environment

In terms of sound, these are average headphones, however, taking into account the price lecture very good. For example, compared to the older Redmi AirDots, the sound is noticeably richer, however, the new Buds 3 Pro play a bit quieter, which I would not expect. One of the best features of the new Redmi headphones is definitely presence of active ambient noise suppression (ANC) and also, on the contrary, the amplification of sounds in the environment, which is the so-called transparency mód. For both functions, I must say that they pleasantly surprised me with their quality, which would probably not be attributed to headphones for a similar price during a blind test.

ANC effectively breaks down the most annoying frequencies, and the amplification of the surroundings is actually correctly labeled as “throughput” in free translation, because the volume of the sound really corresponds to the real surroundings. Sometimes it would be useful to have other levels for these functions, but the headphones should not have that…

(Too much) simple operation

As I mentioned, headphones are able to receive instructions through external control surfaces. They are directly touchable and do not have a physical button, which is nice. Basic operation includes double tap (start / pause playback or answering a call), triple tap (on the left handset one track back, on the right handset one track forward) and a long hold that toggles between ANC and transparency mode. Yes, unfortunately only between them back and forth, which is quite awkward. In situations where I don’t need any of these features, it’s a waste of energy.

Another trickle control is (but that’s a mess with the much more expensive headphones of various brands) that it is not possible to change the volume directly on the plugs. It is therefore necessary to touch a telephone, watch or other transmitting device. Biggest negative notch then Xiaomi set up phone owners for other brands. For example, it is not possible to choose between three levels of ANC, to rely on the adaptation of noise suppression to the environment or to use voice amplification in transparency mode.

These privileges, including resetting the encoder to AAC, waking up by voice, or turning off ANC and transparency mode completely, have headphones only in conjunction with the latest Xiaomi phones. The wormy icing on the cake of inconvenience is the absence of a connection to the voice assistant. But to end the paragraph positively, I commend the possibility of connecting to two devices at the same time. So when you listen to music on one and someone calls you on the other, Redmi Buds 3 Pro switches automatically.

Batteries and charging

When soundproofing and amplifying the surroundings are the best these headphones have ever encountered, charging and battery life are tight. This time, he also got the opportunity to replenish energy wireless charging, which definitely deserves praise. You can conveniently charge the case, for example, on the back of the phone (it has also been tested, for example, with the Galaxy S21 Ultra). When fully discharged, a headphone case can be used for cable connection completely recharge in about 2.5 hours. Wirelessly, of course, it’s slower, but I don’t know the exact value.

As for endurance, it promises on paper up to a nice 28 hours using the case, without the ANC or transparency mode turned on and at 50% volume. Of course, with normal listening at a higher volume, the time goes down, but even so, with regard to the price of headphones, it goes by very pleasant values. It’s a pity that the fact that you simply don’t turn off the suppression or amplification of the surroundings at many phones throws it into it.

Price and availability

You can currently get these headphones in Czech stores for a price of around fifteen hundred. If you would like to spoil a hundred, you can take a look at AliExpress, for example usually a little lower prices (if we do not count the frequent discount promotions) and you can also have the mentioned silicone packaging packed right away.

Final evaluation

If the new Redmi Buds 3 Pro did not spoil the limited possibilities of control with phones of foreign brands, this novelty could be at the top of the selection of headphones with a price between a thousand and two. Despite these software boundaries, Xiaomi has once again proved that Advanced technologies do not always translate into exorbitant prices. If I had a phone of this brand, I probably wouldn’t have thought about buying for a long time. Otherwise, it’s a little thought-provoking, but the equally capable competitors aren’t really found as well.

Pros

+ quality ANC
+ sensitive transparency mode
+ above average endurance

+ wireless charging
+ nice price
+ hilarious design

Cons

– Some functions require MIUI
– slightly lower volume

Will you give these headphones a chance?
