Short, long, hot, cold: there are a lot of discussions to be had about the showering behavior of your fellow residents. Because of course, better for the planet to keep it short, but not so easy for everyone.

“As far as my husband is concerned, the children shower twice a week, and preferably together to save time and water. They are already an environmental burden in themselves and too much showering is not good for anyone, he thinks. I am horrified at the thought of black mourning edges under their nails and unwashed crotches – although I also know that this can be solved with a washcloth. Personally, I prefer to take a shower twice a day, and brush my teeth right away.

The latter is in any case a thing of the past; Recently there is an hourglass in our shower cubicle. ‘Remember the turtles’, my husband taps me on the shoulder encouragingly as I watch the thing growling again. I grudgingly accept his policy, knowing it’s better. For the world and for our relationship.”

Shampoo bars

“Having four children is inherently bad for the environment, so a year ago I switched to menstrual underwear to save on tampons and instituted a new family rule: we would shower every other day and only use shampoo bars. My friend excepted.
