PS5 more energy efficient due to new motherboard design

Sony makes the PS5 more energy efficient. The Japanese managed to get about 20-30 watts of power from the Playstation. That makes a big difference for avid gamers.

PS5 made more energy efficient by team

Due to the chip shortages, there were the necessary delivery problems with various consoles, including the PlayStation 5. This gave manufacturer Sony the space to think about a smart design. In view of the sharply rising energy prices, also in Japan and America, energy costs are becoming increasingly important for people.

Then, of course, there is also the beneficial effect of energy saving on the climate. So Sony went to work to make the PS5 more energy efficient without losing gaming performance. And that seems to have worked out quite well with the 1200 series of the PS5.

Differences from previous versions

Firstly, it is noticeable that the models CFI-1202A and CFI-1202B are a lot lighter and smaller than their predecessors. Compared to the launch model, this version is more than half a kilo lighter.

Passive cooling is now used in the console, through an additional heat-conducting copper metal rod, a so-called heat pipe. Thanks to this passive cooling, less mechanical cooling is required, which of course makes a significant difference in electricity consumption.

The CMOS battery is now also hidden behind the new, smaller heat sink. As a result, the size of the console could be considerably reduced. The disadvantage of this is of course that it is more difficult to replace this battery. For that you will have to partially disassemble the console.

A small detail is that part of the metal shell of the SSD is now open and exposed. This small adjustment probably also reduces energy consumption because passive cooling improves. The electronics of the PS5 have probably also become more energy efficient.

Unfortunately, the price of the console has risen somewhat because of this, but in principle you earn that money back through the lower electricity costs. An avid gamer spends a large part of his free time behind the PlayStation, and then that 30 watts less, of course, taps considerably.
