Police warn of streaming services: fake portals on the rise
Not only serious providers such as Netflix, Amazon and Disney are involved in the streaming market. Fraudulent portals are also romping about online and trying to attract customers. The police are warning of these scams.
Not only reputable and popular providers such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Disney + are surfing the wave of success right now: Streaming is used more often than ever before. However, more and more free riders are jumping on the bandwagon, whose hypocritical scam can cost money.
These are the scams of streaming scammers
The cyber crime department of the State Criminal Police Office of Lower Saxony (LKA). The perpetrators would put websites online that offer current films for streaming – allegedly for little money or even free of charge with a trial subscription. As a rule, clicks on a film would then lead to a request to enter your e-mail address and telephone number. At first glance, the relevant pages look like real streaming providers. Once all the data has been provided, in rare cases it can actually be streamed, and in most cases there is never any consideration.
It gets expensive with invoices by email. The perpetrators would build up pressure, threaten debt collection companies and garnishment. The LKA points out that fake educational videos and tutorials are also used on Youtube in order to still be able to cash in on users who have become suspicious. The streaming fraudsters don’t shy away from downright ridiculous “prices” either. Anyone who wants to switch from the big names in the industry in order to save money is completely wrong. Because the fraudsters often charge three times the real prices and thus come to several hundred euros over a year.
