Pixel: Google’s in-house chip (without Samsung) would not arrive before 2025
Google wants to separate from Samsung for its future Tensor G5 chip which will be used in Pixels. But we will have to wait, since the house chip will not arrive before 2025 according to The Information.
Google’s original plan was to unveil its first fully-customized chip for Pixel smartphones in 2024. Instead, the chip codenamed Redondo missed its trial production deadline last year. Trial production finally took place in early 2023. Therefore, the processor will not be ready in time for mass production in 2024. We will have to wait for the Pixels of 2025 to find out.
Google is working with Samsung for existing Tensor chips in its phones. With the Tensor G5 of 2025, the group will divorce from Samsung. It will rely on TSMC for production, with a 3nm process. TSMC is already involved in the production of Apple’s chips found in the iPhone, iPad and Mac. Moreover, Apple will use 3 nm engraving this year with its iPhone 15 Pro and the A17 chip.
Regarding 2024, Google will continue to work with Samsung. But it will be the last time… unless the model now scheduled for 2025 experiences a new postponement.
