‘People always ask if I should test everything myself’
Saskia ter Veld (34), lives together and is mother of Oscar (5) and Olaf (3) and pregnant with the third. As a marketing manager, she mainly deals with EDC’s foreign titles.
“When I was a student, I gave home parties in which I presented and sold sex toys. It was a part-time job, but I learned a lot from it. I was mostly hired by bachelor parties. I noticed that the loudest, most exuberant types with the biggest mouths were just laughing, screaming and roaring. Precisely the somewhat shy, apparently more well-behaved women were genuinely interested and ordered much more. They also bought the less common toys, they clearly dared more.
Sexual wellness
Now that I’m marketing for Beate Uhse, a German brand of EDC, I don’t necessarily need that specific product knowledge. It’s more about the story around it, the emotion and experience: ‘sexual wellness‘. After all, it is a healthy, normal need for which you do not have to be ashamed and toys can contribute to this.
With the labels for which I am responsible, we focus on female empowerment. Sexual wellness in that context is much more than just toys, it is also about topics that women struggle with: the orgasm gap, fighting inequality, including in the bedroom. And it’s about guarding boundaries and being clear about your needs. I think it’s a beautiful theme.

sex toys
When people hear that I work for a company that specializes in sex toys, I’m always asked if I should try them out too. Apparently my job really appeals to the imagination. But no, when I started my career as a marketing manager for a shoe brand, I wasn’t supposed to try on every pair first. The same goes for the toys.
“I think you should be able to be open about sexuality”
That doesn’t mean I’m being secretive about it. I think you should be able to be open about sexuality. Others sometimes find it difficult. They laugh about it or change color. Two months ago, my neighbor had accepted a package for me. ‘Oh, that’s from my work’, I said and half opened the box, which served as a nice gesture for working at home in corona time and contained something delicious. But my neighbor was shocked, he thought I would unpack a vibrator or something like that before his eyes. But I’m not that bold anymore.
Sex Education
I am honest about sexuality with my children. They don’t know exactly where I work, they are too young for that. But now that I’m pregnant, reproduction is a hot topic. I won’t tell a story about storks, but I will tell you how a baby is created, grows and is born. Of course adapted to their level. I also prefer my sons to ask their questions about sex at home rather than looking them up on the internet. When I was 16 and had to ask my parents for the pill, I found it so embarrassing. I hope to prevent that by removing taboos at a young age.
“Especially in this time of Me Too, it is important to be open about needs and boundaries”
As a mother of two, almost three, boys, I see with my own eyes how the interest in their intimate zone arises at a young age. When the boys are in the bath, they have the greatest fun in each other’s nakedness. I teach them that it is all very interesting and that they are allowed to experiment, but within the framework of their own safe environment. No is no, it’s yours. Especially in this time of Me Too, it is important to be open about needs and boundaries.”
