You have to pay something for it, that sports clubs. Ellen knows all about it, but such a tour of English boarding schools with the cricket team also has its advantages.

Ellen (50) is married to Richard (52) and mother of Cedric (12) and Floris (19):

“Our holiday destination has been fixed for years: England. Cedric is a member of the national cricket team and every summer they are the only Dutchmen to compete against a number of English teams for a week. My oldest son preceded him. So for the second time we are now making the same tour of the English boarding schools where these kinds of tournaments take place.

Half Harry Potter movie

I constantly imagine myself in a Harry Potter movie; a decor complete with clock tower, coats of arms and beautiful dining rooms with paintings meters high. There are several houses on the site where the children sleep in bunk beds. The parents of the Dutch players camp on a back meadow. There is no electricity, the school launderette has a few toilets and only one shower. It is difficult, but with wine and a candle it is also cozy in our awning.

The whole week is all about cricket and the matches are long. Sometimes I film some of it, but I often sit next to the field with a book. Or we’re all screaming. The supporters of the Dutch team are more exuberant than all English parents put together. We attract a lot of attention in our orange outfits.

After a week, that shirt stays in the caravan and it’s my turn. Then we tour on and my men go with me to beautiful cities, museums and a long walk.”
