OPPO introduces Air Glass smart glasses

At the INNO DAY 2021 event, OPPO officially introduced the OPPO Air Glass smart glasses. Equipped with an Spark projector, developed by OPPO, Micro LED and a custom-made diffractive optical waveform display, aR (assisted Reality) glasses support four different ways of user interaction through touch, voice, head movement and hands, giving users faster and easier access to the information they need.

“OPPO has been exploring the possibilities of Extended Reality (XR) for a long time, and thanks to Air Glass, we have finally created smart glasses that are truly within reach of consumers.” said Levin Liu, vice president of OPPO and head of the OPPO research institute. “As their futuristic design suggests, OPPO Air Glass is to revolutionize the way we view and consume information. Their easy-to-use display can present the most important news we need right in front of our eyes. With OPPO Air Glass, the world will never look the same again. ”

Pioneering form: thin and light design inspired by nature

OPPO Air Glass glasses are built on a pioneering construction of a monocular waveguide. Air Glass is based on the characteristic design philosophy of the OPPO brand and is characterized by free-flowing curves, which give rise to their light and minimalist appearance. With a total weight of approximately 30 g, OPPO Air Glass is one of the lightest devices with a monocular waveguide and can be worn similar to ordinary glasses.

The body design of the glasses is inspired by the feathers – it is light, elegant and curved, with a touch panel that resembles an elegant feather quill. The design of the monocular waveguide lens, in turn, is inspired by the wings of the cicada and thus goes beyond the conventional limitations of round or rounded rectangular spectacle lenses. The lens is mounted in a light and thin frame, which houses all components, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100 platform.

The frame of OPPO Air Glass glasses is made by CNC technology, which lends the design a touch of sophistication and precision. The unique and eye-catching design of OPPO Air Glass glasses makes them a stylish technological accessory for everyday wear, even when you are not using them.

Developed at OPPO, the top-of-the-line Micro LED and five high-transparency glass lenses deliver an avant-garde AR experience

Thanks to the integration of OPPO’s own microprojector, advanced Micro LED and its own waveguide technology, OPPO Air Glass provides clear and sharp content, whether worn indoors or outdoors, ensuring an excellent aR experience at all times.

The heart of the OPPO Air Glass imaging system is the Spark microprojector developed by OPPO – one of the most compact projection systems in the industry, with a volume of only 0.5 cm3, roughly the size of a coffee bean. The projector is equipped with a metal cover, made on CNC, with a glass lens module, which ensures better heat dissipation and stability. The projector is equipped with a high-end Micro LED, which has a brightness of up to 3 million rivets.

OPPO Air Glass uses a bespoke optical diffraction waveguide that supports two display modes – 16-level grayscale and 256-level grayscale – and can provide an average brightness of up to 1,400 nits, ensuring vivid and sharp images in a variety of lighting conditions. In addition, two layers of sapphire crystal are used to cover the waveguide on both sides, which provides protection with better transparency.

OPPO Air Glass is designed to be accessible to as many people as possible, including users with refractive errors such as myopia and hypermetropia. The glasses are available with two different types of rims – silver half-frame and black full-frame – which can be better adapted to users requiring corrective glasses. Both colors are available in two sizes.

Unlimited control with four ways to interact

OPPO Air Glass glasses can be operated using the Smart Glass application in the OPPO Watch 2 and in any OPPO smartphone with ColorOS 11 or higher installed. They also support four intuitive methods of interaction – touch, voice, hand movements and head movements.

After pairing Air Glass with OPPO Watch 2, users can also use hand movements to confirm, cancel, and switch application cards. In addition, for a completely new way of interaction, Air Glass can recognize head movements. For example, you can open or close notifications by gently nodding or shaking your head.

Development of various applications together with partners in the field

A number of applications are installed in OPPO Air Glass goggles, including those developed by OPPO. These include, for example, weather, calendar, health, reading device, translator and navigation.

The translator function is a great helper in intercultural communication. After pairing, one user’s voice input is automatically translated into the target language texts, which are then immediately displayed on the other user’s Air Glass. Air Glass now supports two-way translation of Mandarin Chinese into English, and combinations of Mandarin Chinese-Japanese and Mandarin Chinese-Korean will be offered in the future.

Another innovative application of Air Glass is a reading device (teleprompter), which allows adaptive display of text, with which your presentation at work or in public will be a toy.

OPPO is also working closely with Baidu to customize applications such as Baidu Walk & Bike Navigation and Explore Nearby for OPPO Air Glass. Through navigation, users can get directions for traveling on foot or by bike, while Explore Nearby can display information about nearby shops and other points of interest based on the user’s location and orientation.

Availability

OPPO Air Glass glasses should be launched in China in the first quarter of 2022. The device will be available in two colors, black or white, along with two custom accessories in the form of rings.
