OnePlus’ new OS may be called H₂OOS
We now know that we will soon have to say goodbye to OxygenOS from OnePlus. The Chinese phone maker is increasingly moving towards Oppo and that means that even the operating systems of these phones are merging. And that of OnePlus seems to get a new name: H₂OOS.

HOOS
The question was whether OnePlus’ operating system and Oppo’s would merge completely and continue under the name of Oppo’s: ColorOS. However, it now appears that the operating system of OnePlus will probably get a new name: H₂OOS. That probably doesn’t read like hoos or ha oos: it says H₂O OS: OS is operating system and H₂O is the chemical name for water.
On the other hand, it’s hard to pronounce: HOOS, because it’s like stuttering on the O’s. Yet that choice comes from somewhere: what we know as OnePlus’ OxygenOS, is known in China as HydrogenOS.
OnePlus
It’s also not official yet, but it comes from a trade name that OnePlus has applied for in China. Mukul Sharma of Gizmochina reports this, but there is a catch. OnePlus also seems to have registered this trade name in 2015. It may have decided to do something with that idea after all, but it could also just think the name is very clever for the ‘merged’ version of its operating system.
That merger has already started a bit: there are many features of Oppo’s ColorOS in OnePlus’ Android 12 skin. In June 2021, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau announced that OnePlus and Oppo will do more together, but then indicated that OxygenOS would not disappear. However, he announced a few months later that a new operating system would be developed that would combine OxygenOS and ColorOS.
ColorOS
At the time, many people expected that it would be called ColorOS and that OnePlus would mainly merge with Oppo, but this trade name registration could mean something else. Nevertheless, we are not taking any chances: hundreds of patents and trade names are registered every day and nothing is done about it.
