OnePlus introduces new update policies and more for OxygenOS 13

During a roundtable discussion, OnePlus told more about OxygenOS 13, its software shell based on Android 13. The manufacturer also comes with a new update policy.

Improvements in OxygenOS 13

Gary Chen, head of Software Products OnePlus and Crayon Hsieh, head of OnePlus’ OneLab of the operating system were questioned by analyst Ben Wood about their plans for OnePlus’ operating system.

1. OxygenOS 13 is faster

For example, thanks to the so-called ‘AI Systembooster’, OxygenOS 13 is considerably faster in, among other things, installing apps (20 percent faster) and opening them (10 percent faster). The algorithm learns your behavior and when it knows that you often game at a certain time, it ensures that other apps fade into the background and there is more power left for gaming.

2. Finally an always-on display

In addition, more was said about the always-on display for OnePlus, so you always see information on your screen, such as notifications. OnePlus has also entered into a partnership with Spotify, so you can see on your always-on screen which artist is playing and which song. This way you don’t have to unlock the phone every time. OnePlus entered into this partnership partly because it wants to be different from the rest. Chen: “If you all put your phone on the table, you can’t distinguish them with their black screens. Now it is.” You can even turn on the next song and the phone follows your eyes to display the correct information.

OnePlus also wants to point out climate change to customers who want it. It claims to be the first to develop a dynamic always-on display that is triggered by how the temperature changes at your location. The daily temperature and time are taken into account. If you look at your phone, you will see a small animation with, for example, a polar bear. When it gets colder, the polar bear has a nice ice floe and two cubs, but when it gets warmer, the cubs and a large part of the ice disappear.

3. Quiet design

In terms of design, OnePlus mainly wants the operating system to offer a smooth experience. The colors must be vibrant, the fonts must make you feel comfortable and we mainly see a lot of minimalistic icons, natural and round shapes. You can see this on the calculator, for example: the gray buttons that disappeared into the background are now replaced by white round buttons that stand out much more. The fact that the font should make you feel comfortable has everything to do with the corona virus. “As a team we look at what is happening in the world. After corona, people need to be calmed down more.”

4. Spatial audio

Another innovation that OnePlus gave more information about is spatial audio. It is the first Android manufacturer to work with Google on spatial audio and promises to offer more apps that support this form of sound. It focuses on multiple dimensions, including where the sound goes, the quality of the sound and dynamic tracking.

5. Better update policy

To extend the expiration date of phones, OnePlus has made a promise: four generations of OxygenOS and five years of security updates. It only applies to selected devices coming to market from 2023. With four new Android versions and at least five years of security updates, OnePlus will soon be on a par with Samsung. OxygenOS 13.1, is expected to launch globally in the first half of 2023.

Oxygen OS 13.1

OxygenOS 13.1 is the first update to OxygenOS and is all about security. For example, there will be an improved version of OnePlus’ Private Safe function (which we have known since OxygenOS 13). There also seem to be more functions for users with a physical challenge. The multimedia experience of applications such as photo albums is being improved, in addition to the obvious software optimizations.

OnePlus did not tell more about the collaboration with OPPO. Also read our interview with Pete Lau: Pete Lau: ‘OxygenOS name will remain, separate from ColorOS’.

OnePlus 10T

The OnePlus 10T is a flagship where everything revolves around speed. The phone gets the powerful Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, a 6.7 inch AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 4,800 mAh that you can charge with a 150W fast charger. You can charge the empty battery to 100% in 19 minutes.
