OnePlus adds Always-on display to OnePlus 7 Pro and 7T Pro

For years, OnePlus indicated that they “had no intention of adding” an Always-on display in OxygenOS. From Android 11 and OxygenOS 11 things changed. It was striking that the first beta update of the 7 Pro and 7T Pro came without this function. This has now been resolved in the second beta version of Android 11.

OnePlus 7 Pro and 7T Pro

OnePlus started on Friday afternoon with the rollout of the second Open Beta update of Android 11 and OxygenOS 11 for the OnePlus 7 (Pro) and 7T (Pro), the company writes in the announcements on the OnePlus Forum. With the Open Beta, of course, users get access to all the features of Android 11, as well as the completely redesigned interface of OxygenOS 11 – an interface that seems to have copied many details from Samsung’s One UI interface. However, one important feature of OxygenOS 11 was omitted in the first Open Beta, namely the Always-on display.

In the past, OnePlus has repeatedly stated that it did not want to roll out an Always-on display due to the increase in the power consumption of its phones. With the Android 11 update for the OnePlus 8 Pro, these concerns were set aside for the first time and the feature was added. OnePlus was expected to bring this to other phones as well. This now seems to be the case, but it could be limited to the Pro models of the OnePlus 7 and 7T series.

Always-on display

In the update notes of the second Open Beta updates of the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro, as well as the 7T and 7T Pro, you can read that OnePlus does add the Always-on display function, but not for all OnePlus 7 and 7T- series of telephones. Only OnePlus 7 Pro and 7T Pro users will now be able to enable the functionality via settings -> utilities -> OnePlus Laboratory -> Always-on display. It remains possible that in the stable Android 11 update, OnePlus still chooses to offer the 7 and 7T an Always-on display function.

In addition to the Always-on display for the OnePlus 7 Pro and 7T Pro, this second Open Beta update also includes changes for all 7 series phones. OnePlus claims to have improved the operation of the automatic brightness, reduced the energy consumption of the phones, solved a problem with the battery icon that sometimes did not appear in the status bar and finally solved a problem in Pro mode that occurred while launching the OnePlus Camera app.

Open Beta update

For the time being, the Android 11 update of the OnePlus 7 (Pro) and 7T (Pro) is still in the Open Beta phase – presumably the stable update will be finalized in the coming weeks, after which you will without installing a beta update of Android 11 can enjoy. Users who are already using the first Open Beta update for Android 11 on the 7 (Pro) or 7T (Pro) will receive the second Open Beta as an OTA (Over-the-air) update.

Users on the stable version of Android 10 will have to manually install the Open Beta or wait for OnePlus to roll out the stable update. If you use the phone daily, it is advisable to wait for the stable Android 11 update. Beta updates contain serious bugs in some cases and simply annoying bugs in others, which you wouldn’t want to be bothered with in everyday use.
