OLED EX: LG’s technology for 30% brighter panels

LG Display presents a new technology which is called OLED EX. According to the group, it makes it possible to have panels 30% brighter in comparison with conventional OLED screens.

Brighter panels with OLED EX

In his presentation, LG Display emphasizes that each pixel in the OLED panels emits light independently, which means that it can be fully turned on or off. This allows televisions to display perfect blacks without the “blooming” effect of LED televisions. But at the same time, the pixels of OLED panels cannot achieve the same brightness levels as those of LED displays. Current OLED TVs can show peak brightness of up to around 500-600 nits, while the Mini-LED can reach 2,000 nits or more.

This is where the OLED EX comes into play (with E for Evolution and X which comes from the word eXperience). This technology uses deuterium compounds to allow light emitting diodes to emit stronger light. “Once stabilized, the deuterium compounds allow the screen to emit brighter light while maintaining high efficiency for a long time.”, assures LG Display.

In addition, there is improvement in color accuracy. The technology uses several algorithms that are able to predict the use of 33 million OLED diodes in an 8K display, so that it “Precisely controls the energy input of the screen to more precisely express the details and colors of the video content being played”.

Further improvements and increasing sales

LG takes the opportunity to reduce the thickness by 30%. As for the borders, we go from 6 mm to 4 mm on 65-inch OLED screens. There is currently no release date communicated.

In the process, LG announces that sales of OLED TV increased by 70% last year, despite a drop of 12% for the global market including all technologies. “With our new OLED EX technology, we want to offer our customers even more innovative and premium experiences thanks to the evolution of our OLED technology, our algorithms and our designs”LG Display said.
