Wear OS 3 has only been available for Samsung smartwatches for over a year. Most recently, Google’s Pixel Watch came out with Wear OS 3.5. Now Fossil finally wants to start distributing the update that customers have been waiting for for so long. However, not all functions will be available with it.

Fossil is distributing Wear OS 3 for Gen 6 smartwatches

It hasn’t been easy for manufacturers of Android smartwatches in recent months. Through the exclusive deal with Samsung, Google initially only enabled the latest operating system on the Galaxy Watch 4 (test) and Galaxy Watch 5 (test). Manufacturers like Fossil, who have supported the operating system and brought products to market with it for years, have been ignored. But the long wait is over. From October 17, 2022, Wear OS 3 will be available as an update for 6th generation smartwatches (Source: AndroidCentral).

So if you have a Fossil Gen 6 smartwatch, or a Skagen or Michael Kors smartwatch that runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 4100 or 4100+, you’ll soon be able to install Wear OS 3. According to Fossil, the software should be very similar to that of the Pixel Watch. The company has only made minor adjustments. But the Google Assistant is still missing, because this is not supported in the version. This is probably due to the Qualcomm processor. As an alternative, there is Alexa. But the Fossil watches supported iPhones.

Complete reset of the smartwatch required when upgrading

Google recently confirmed that older Android smartwatches are finally getting the Wear OS 3 update. However, according to Google, in order to be able to switch from Wear OS 2 to Wear OS 3, a complete reinstallation must be carried out. You would have to set up the smartwatch from scratch after the update. It remains to be seen when the Google Assistant will be on the watch. In addition to Fossil, other companies are sure to follow soon with updates to Wear OS 3 for their smartwatches.
