Number of new registrations in Germany explodes

In May, 27,000 new electric cars were registered across Germany. This means an increase of 380 percent compared to the previous month, which was weak due to the corona.
Last year, Germany had risen to become the European champion for pure electric vehicles, thanks in particular to the subsidies that were raised again in the summer for the purchase of electric cars. A total of 400,000 new electric cars were registered in 2020. The first half of the year in particular was characterized by weak sales figures in the automotive sector. In the first five months of 2021, the number of newly registered electric cars was significantly higher than in the same month of the previous year – this was also the case in May.

11.6 percent of new registrations are electric cars
For the past month reported the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) for battery electric vehicles (BEV) an increase of 380 percent compared to May 2020. According to this, a total of 26,786 new electric cars were registered in May of this year. This means that the share of pure electric vehicles in the total number of newly registered vehicles is 11.6 percent. Plug-in hybrid vehicles account for a similarly high share of the overall market, with 27,222 newly registered cars – an increase of 303 percent compared to May 2020.
The significant growth in new vehicle registrations is due, on the one hand, to the restrictions of the corona pandemic in the past year, such as electrive.net. In May 2020, for example, there was a drop in newly registered cars across all classes of around 50 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. Pure electric cars also posted a plus of 20.5 percent in the month of the crisis. Accordingly, another important driver is likely to be the environmental bonus.
CO2 emissions from German vehicles are falling
According to KBA, the increased market shares of electric cars in the overall market have a positive impact on the average CO2 emissions of the German vehicle fleet. This fell by 19.3 percent to 125 grams per kilometer, but is still above the EU target of 95 grams per kilometer. A total of 230,000 new cars were registered in May 2021. That was 37 percent more than in the same month last year.
