Minecraft Earth alternatives
After the huge success of Pokémon GO, Microsoft thought it could do the same with Minecraft Earth. The popular block world of Minecraft was combined with going outside and augmented reality.
When the game launched in the fall of 2019, we were quite pleased with it in our Minecraft Earth review. With the necessary caveats: “You can still run into some bugs and in terms of options the game feels a bit limited, but that is what seasoned Minecraft players are used to.” It was an Early Access version of the game. This is an early version that is not completely finished, but will be expanded later with improvements and new functions.
Now a year and a half later, the plug is already being pulled from the game. You can download the latest update for the game, which removes all real money in-app purchases and reduces the hassle in-game, so players can build without hassle for a while. The game will actually be stopped on June 30. After that, you can no longer download and play Minecraft Earth.
Corona crisis?
How did that happen? Gamemaker Mojang Studios writes on his blog: “Minecraft Earth is designed around free movement and play together. Two things that have become almost impossible in the current global situation. ” The game maker therefore blames the corona crisis. That sounds logical, but it is not entirely fair. There was a lot more to the game.
A look at the reviews in the App Store shows that the game is full of glitches and lacks all kinds of features. Also, the continued success of Pokémon GO shows that people have no problem going outside. Pokémon GO raised more than a billion dollars in 2020. Players spent 11 percent more in the app compared to 2019.
Petition
A petition has been launched to preserve Minecraft Earth, but the number of votes remains limited. The founder, who calls himself Random Songwriter, tells against iPhoned: “I chose to make a petition because the game is actually quite good. We have made memories with it and it is a source of joy for people like me. ”
Random Songwriter also thinks the corona crisis is not the real reason for the game to end: “If Covid were a problem, Pokémon GO would also stop. But I don’t think it’s a lack of features myself. I think the game has even more than Pokémon. But knowing Microsoft, it’s all about money. ”
The best Minecraft Earth alternatives
If the petition does not help, the plug will really go out of Minecraft Earth. Fortunately, there are several alternatives that you can get started with. We list them for you.
1. Minecraft
If you can’t get enough of building with blocks, then of course you have to go to the game that started it all: Minecraft. The version for smartphones is now the same as that for PC and game consoles. That means you get a really complete game full of content. And you don’t have to worry that this game will end soon.
2. Pokémon GO
If you liked going outside, nothing can beat Pokémon GO. While you can’t build in this game, you can do a lot of outdoor assignments. You have to collect, fight and walk out Pokémon to hatch eggs.

3. WrldCraft Block Legends AR
If you want a game very similar to Minecraft Earth, you can try WrldCraft Block Legends AR. Also in this game the intention is to build with blocks in the real world via augmented reality. The game looks like a weak copy, but the makers claim to have been before Minecraft Earth.
