Noise Capture – Assessment of your sound environment

Fruit of a collaboration between the Environmental Acoustics Laboratory (Ifsttar) and the team DECIDES to Lab-STICC (CNRS), with the support of the European Commission, this application currently in beta phase is dedicated to the evaluation of your sound environment. It will give you the possibility of performing various noise measurements in order to know your noise exposure.

In addition, you can contribute to the collaborative development of noise maps by transferring your information to the community in a completely anonymous manner.

Features:
– Noise measurement and calculation of acoustic indicators (Leq, LAmin, LAmax, LA10, LA50, LA90 …) on a path /
– Description of measures (text, photo, tags).
– Visualization of measurements on a map.
– History of measurements.
– Smartphone calibration from a reference device.
– Detailed help on the use of the application

Recommendations for quality measurement:
– The Smartphone must not be in the pocket but held in the hand.
– The smartphone’s microphone must not be masked.
– Take a noise measurement, without adding noise!
– It is possible to use an external microphone of better quality and calibrated.

Contribute to collaborative noise maps:
– Authorize the transfer of measurements to the community.
– Take the measurement outside buildings.
– Do not take measurements in rainy or windy periods.
– Consult the noise map online: http://noise-planet.org/map_noisecapture/index.html/

Contribute to the NoiseCapture project:
– Participate in the development of the code: https://github.com/Ifsttar/NoiseCapture
– Report your comments, your questions: https://github.com/Ifsttar/NoiseCapture/issues
– Organize NoiseCapture Parties to map together the sound environment of your territory: http://noise-planet.org/

Developer warnings:
– Although NoiseCapture App is developed by specialists, keep in mind that a smartphone will never replace a professional sound level meter. If you need advanced expertise, contact a professional.
– The quality of the measurement depends on the technical performance of your smartphone and its calibration. Depending on the nature of your phone and the version of Android you are using, you may not be able to measure with sufficient accuracy.
