No new Switch before at least 2024, Nintendo announces

There will be no new Switch in 2023 and it is Shuntaro Furukawa, the president of Nintendo, who announces it. A new console won’t arrive until 2024 at the earliest.

Instead, Nintendo hopes to reinvigorate Switch sales “supplementing existing titles with a continuous flow of new titles and complementary content”. The schedule currently confirmed by Nintendo includes the release this week of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4 in July, and a pair of add-ons for Pokemon Scarlet And Purple called “the buried treasure of the Zero Zone” which will be launched in the fall. Metroid Prime 4 is also announced, but has no release date.

“It will be difficult to maintain the sales momentum of the Switch in its seventh year”, said the president of Nintendo during the telephone call which followed the publication of the group’s financial results. “Our goal of selling 15 million units in the fiscal year is a bit overstated. But we will do our best to sustain demand as we approach the holiday season to achieve our goal.”.

The Switch was released in March 2017. Nintendo sold 125.62 million copies. The pace slowed in the last quarter, but the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom could help the Japanese company see a noticeable gain in sales.
