NL-Alert is the digital alarm tool of the government in the Netherlands. The system will be tested again on 5 December. NL-Alert was introduced nationwide by the government ten years ago.

NL-Alert test on 5 December

Every six months, the NL-Alert alarm system is tested by the Dutch government. It is the national digital alarm system with which people can be warned in the event of an emergency. Think of life or health-threatening situations such as major disasters, toxic clouds, (major) fires or another need to inform a large group of people. NL-Alert is tested twice a year by means of a control message. This is to see if your phone is set up correctly. The NL-Alert message is also displayed on digital billboards and travel information screens in public transport.

NL-Alert was introduced nationwide in November 2012. The system is celebrating its tenth anniversary. It has now been used thousands of times. The control message will be sent out on Monday 5 December. This will happen around 12:00 noon. It may just be that your phone is making a lot of noise. When you receive the verification message, you know that your phone is correctly set up to receive an NL-Alert.

Test message

The text in the control message is as follows;

Visit www.nl-alert.nl *** TEST MESSAGE Netherlands Government Public Warning System. No action required. More information: www.nl-alert.nl/english”

If you did not receive a control message, but the person next to you did, this could have various causes. An example can be found in the video below.
