News apps are popular

The National News App Monitor (pdf) shows that the use of news apps is still very popular. In fact; the news app is gaining popularity and being installed more and more. More than 12 million Dutch people have one or more news apps on their phones. Seven million Dutch people also use a regional news app. This is done most often in Friesland, Limburg and Zeeland. It is striking that in Groningen the regional broadcaster RTV Noord is more popular with its app than that of the national media.

According to the research, the app is the most important means of following the news. 88 percent of the survey participants follow the news via an app. Via television this is 69 percent, radio comes out at 53 percent and social media at 41 percent. The (paper) newspaper comes out at 29 percent.

The NOS news app is the most used; by 54 percent. Nu.nl is right behind this with 52 percent. Nationally, third place is taken by RTL Nieuws (34 percent), followed by AD with 33 percent. However, improvements are also welcome; according to the research. Young people in particular have a large share in the users of a news app. On average, they have six news apps on their phone. They sometimes experience the functionality and user experience as something that falls short.
