New Xbox update lets you play PC games – but one important thing is missing

Microsoft’s Edge browser recently opened the door to play PC games on the Xbox. Nvidia’s GeForce Now proves to be the key, but it doesn’t want to pass on a very special game.

GeForce Now Strikes on Xbox: No Death Stranding on Microsoft Console

Nvidia’s streaming service is known to give you access to part of your own software libraries so you can watch the games afterwards to be transferred to other devices via the cloud – recently including the Microsoft console.

With the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate there is already an in-house streaming and subscription offer from Microsoft for the Xbox, but you still like to take an additional selection of games from platforms such as Steam, GOG or the Epic Games Store with you, right? After all, it allows you to use games that are sometimes not available for the console or that you have bought for the PC, but maybe still want to use the Xbox.

Of all things, one extraordinary work by Hideo Kojima should have disappointed faces: Although Death Stranding On the PC it is still allowed to stream via GeForce Now, access via Edge is apparently blocked as soon as you try it via the Xbox. At the moment we can only speculate as to why this is so.

And why have scalpers started buying up refrigerators? The answer is in the GIGA headlines:

Who is the mastermind behind the lock?

One is tempted to point the finger at Sony – after all, the Japanese company co-financed Kojima Productions’ first project after the separation from Konami and thereby not only acquired the trademark rights, but also the console exclusivity for the PlayStation secured. The version via GeForce Now, however, is the PC version, the distribution rights of which are owned by Publisher 505 Games.

It is believed to be playing Death Stranding over the Xbox a console exclusivity clause or the streaming would undermine and thus injure. As a result, it was decided to block the somewhat different Walking Simulator in the search and game list at GeForce Now as soon as it is registered that the Edge browser is being used on the Xbox.

There are also references to Regional differences in the implementation: In Russia, Death Stranding can apparently be played without any problems using GeForce Now and Microsoft Edge on the Xbox. According to Tom Warren, Nvidia has not yet responded to inquiries about the topic.

The combination of Edge Browser and GeForce Now has recently made it possible to use PC games on the Xbox via stream. But of all things, the PC and PS4 exclusive Death Stranding by Hideo Kojima is not one of them.
