New update disables important accessories

For quite a few photographers with an iPhone or iPad, this adapter has been an indispensable tool for years. Unfortunately, Apple quickly checkmates this with the latest update to iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 – a warning.

The reports from many users on the forums at MacRumors, Reddit and Apple itself are disturbing. Consequently loses Apple’s Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter after the update to iOS 16.5 or iPadOS 16.5 its function (source: MacRumors).

iOS 16.5 disables adapters for iPhone and iPad

The adapter is an important accessory for many photographers. On the one hand, digital cameras can be connected to the iPhone or iPad directly for the photo upload connect and on the other hand supply and charge the iPhone or iPad via the existing Lightning connection. Incidentally, the USB 3 port is also suitable for operating a USB microphone and other USB devices.

Apple still sells the adapter in its own online shop for just under 50 euros, it gets cheaper in free trade. Amazon, for example, currently requires almost 39 euros for it (see on Amazon).

In the face of the problem, this recent Apple ad sounds like mockery:

However, after the update to iOS 16.5 or iPadOS 16.5, which Apple released a few days ago, the adapter can no longer power devicesconnected to both of the ports.

Ergo: If you need the adapter and have not yet made an update, better wait to install it.

Waiting for the next update

We should expect Apple to fix the problem in a future software update. While developers can currently access iOS 16.6, Apple is likely to address the issue before the release of this update. Accordingly, we wouldn’t be surprised if Apple fixed a problem with a potential minor update to iOS 16.5.1 fixed in the next few days.

Speaking of the iOS update: You will get the future of the Apple system on June 5th to face. The WWDC, Apple’s developer conference, starts on Monday with a keynote that will focus on iOS 17, among other things. A release of this update is then scheduled for September as usual.
