New type of wind turbine to supply 80,000 households

The expansion of wind turbines continues. However, the Norwegian company Wind Catching Systems has now presented a new type of system: a huge wind catcher which, with its 126 turbines, is intended to supply up to 80,000 households with energy.

As part of the energy transition, the expansion of renewable energies continues to gain momentum. In addition to the commissioning of new solar and wind power plants on land, the seas also offer potential for energy generation. Because in the future, so-called wind catchers could supply energy for up to 80,000 households in addition to offshore systems.

Meanwhile, the idea came from by the Norwegian company Wind Catching Systems. The largest version of a corresponding system is around 300 meters high. At the same time, the wind catcher is up to 350 meters wide, so that the wind can drive up to 126 turbines. Each individual achieves an output of up to one megawatt.

Windcatcher produces five times the amount of energy

If the construction floats on the high seas, it should supply up to 80,000 households with energy. Because compared to a classic wind turbine, the wind catcher can produce five times the amount of energy in a smaller space. In turn, five of the systems deliver the same yield as a complete offshore wind farm.

In addition to these advantages, the system can be used with strong and weak wind speeds. According to Wind Catching Systems, maintenance is easier than with classic systems. At the same time, the company promises a longer service life due to less wear and tear.

First pilot project only in the second half of the decade

However, it will probably take some time before the technology can be used commercially. In 2021, the company presented a first prototype. A pilot project is now to follow. The first wind catcher is equipped with seven to twelve turbines and will be operational in the coming years. However, the first complete system is not likely to be available until around 2030.

The idea at least seems to have potential. Many companies have already invested several million euros in the project, including General Motors. Nevertheless, the expansion of wind farms remains the most important goal in the fight against climate change in the medium term.
