Bernhard’s War: The Life of a Prince in Exile

A new, enlightening look at Prince Bernhard’s war history. Bernhard’s War is about the wonderful and often spectacular life of the Prince of the Netherlands during the Second World War. Acclaimed biographer Dik van der Meulen describes Bernhard as a complex figure, who combined opportunism with contempt for death; a man who was self-centered yet loyal to his friends – though not always to his own wife Juliana, the future queen.

During his exile in London, Prince Bernhard experienced a comet-like military career. Within four years he rose from captain without powers to lieutenant general and became commander of the organized resistance in the Netherlands. Still, Queen Wilhelmina and he thought that there could have been even more to it.

How is it possible that a German-born prince, who still had an unpaid office job in 1936, had become one of the most influential and popular Dutchmen in 1945? This book contains many new insights into the doings of the prince during the Second World War. Above all, it shows that Bernhard, partly due to his mother-in-law, was a considerable security risk.
